CURRICULUM: BROADCAST JOURNALISM

Before students interested in broadcast journalism take to the airwaves, they get a solid news writing foundation through a number of course offerings, Jour 380 - Television News Writing; Jour 385 - Beginning Television Reporting and Production; and Jour 498C - Arizona Cat's Eye.

Jour 380 introduces students to writing, reporting, and production techniques required for broadcast news. The course also enables them to strengthen solid writing, reporting, and ethical decision-making skills acquired in other journalism courses.

Journ 385 is a very "hands-on" course has three fundamental goals: introducing and developing television reporting and production skills; strengthening solid writing, reporting, and ethical decision-making skills acquired in other journalism courses; and developing the reporting and production skills necessary for success in the broadcast capstone course, Jour 498C - Arizona Cat's Eye.

Working on Arizona Cat's Eye gives students extensive hands-on experiences to learn how to write, report, shoot, produce, and edit hard news and feature stories for broadcast. The best stories of the semester will air as part of a news magazine on KUAT-TV (PBS), Channel 6. Ideally, by the end of the semester students will have produced "air" quality news reports that they can include on a resume tape. This course may be repeated once for credit. Prerequisites for this course are: 205, 206, 208, and 380.
