Oct. 12 border safety workshop
features first-aid training, reporters' panel
The School of Journalism will sponsor a border safety workshop from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12, in Marshall Room 341 featuring safety tips and first aid training for students who plan to report from the U.S.-Mexico border region and elsewhere.
The workshop will cover UA and School of Journalism policies regarding crossing the border to report from Mexico; emotional aid, such as dealing with the impact of covering human distress,trauma, fear; resource packets, which will include university travel forms, maps, list of contacts, list of Web sites to explore, and a checklist of what to take; and first-aid training by the UA College of Medicine Wilderness Medicine Society Student Interest Group
Organized by the journalism faculty's border safety committee and sponsored by the Graduate Journalism Student Advisory Council, the workshop also will feature a Q and A with a panel of local reporters and graduate students from Latin American Studies and Journalism who have traveled extensively.
The media representatives include Keith Rosenblum, Tom Miller and Brady McCombs. Rosenblum has covered the border for various publications for more than 20 years. In addition to writing about the border, he is the owner of a firm that supports individuals who conduct business in Mexico. Tom Miller is the author of numerous books including On the Border in which he writes about the borderlands from Texas to California. Brady McCombs is an award-winning journalist who covers the border for the Arizona Daily Star.
Faculty representatives include Celeste González de Bustamante, who has reported from the border for more thana decade; Kevin R. Kemper, who holds a Ph.D. in journalism and a law degree; Jay Rochlin, who grew up on the border in Nogales, Ariz., and is the instructor for Border Beat, an online magazine covering the border region; and Maggy Zanger, who ran an institute training Iraqi journalists who want to work for independent news media.
The training is strongly recommended for students in Epitaph, El Independiente, Cat’s Eye, Border Beat, Arizona News Service.
Funding for the workshop was made possible through a grant from the Graduate and Professional Student Council. Refreshments will be served.
