Obama and Latin American media focus of Journalism Research Colloquium
Celeste González de Bustamante will discuss “Hope is stronger than fear: Latin American Media and the New Obama Administration?” at a School of Journalism Research Colloquium from 4 to 5 p.m. Thursday, April 23, in Marshall Building Room 341.
González de Bustamante explains how Latin American journalists and opinion makers have reacted to the Obama administration. Historically, she says, media in Latin America have portrayed the United States as either a threat or opportunity. Preliminary findings suggest that media view the new administration as a central point of opportunity for Latin America. In contrast, Latin America may not be a priority for the Obama administration.
An assistant professor at the University of Arizona School of Journalism, and an affiliated faculty at the UA Center for Latin American Studies, González de Bustamante is completing a book for publication on the history of television news in Mexico titled, ‘Muy Buenas Noches:’ The Early Years of Mexican Television News, 1950-1970. Aside from her research interests in media in Latin America, Dr. Bustamante has more than 15 years of professional experience in the field of television journalism.
