Research colloquium to focus on
access-to-information laws

"The global diffusion of access-to-information laws: a contextual analysis" is the topic for an Oct. 28 research colloquium in the School of Journalism presented by Jeannine Relly, an assistant professor of journalism. It begins at 5 p.m. in Room 341 of the Marshall Building.

This exploratory cross-national study examined the global diffusion of access-to-information laws and the political and economic contexts in which these laws have been adopted, implemented, or utilized. This research found that the majority of nations adopting access laws are developing nations; and most of the adoptions have taken place in the new millennium. A number of the nations with access laws have challenging political and economic environments for public access to information.

Relly is an assistant professor of journalism and an affiliated faculty member of the Center for Latin American Studies. She also is the journalism coordinator for senior honors theses. Relly worked as a journalist for more than a dozen years. She received her doctorate from the School of Public Affairs at Arizona State University and her master’s degree in journalism from the University of Arizona, with a research focus on environmental reporting. She holds a bachelor of science degree from Virginia Tech.
