Workshop to aid public understanding
of Middle East and Islamic World
A workshop on how to write effective commentaries and opinion pieces will be held from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25, at the Marriott University Park, co-sponsored by the UA Center for Middle Eastern Studies and the School of Journalism. Lunch will follow.
“Writing for the Media: Helping the Public Understand the Middle East and Islamic World” will be led by panelists William O. Beeman, professor and chair of anthropology at the University of Minnesota; Mark Kimble, former editorial page editor and associate editor of the Tucson Citizen; and Sarah Garrecht Gassen, editorial writer at the Arizona Daily Star and an adjunct faculty member in the UA School of Journalism. Maggy Zanger, an associate professor of practice in journalism, will facilitate the panel.
Participants are asked to bring ideas for op-eds based on current events in the region. RSVP to the Center for Middle Eastern Studies or by calling 520-621-5450. The workshop is free and open to the public and is made possible by a grant from the Social Science Research Council.
