Faculty/Staff Kudos - Week of Jan. 1, 2008

The National Association of College and University Residence Halls recognized Susan Knight as a UA faculty fellow. Her nomination for recognition as the "Spotlight of the Month" for November won at the national level. The award cited her impact on the residents of Gila Hall, with whom she visits weekly.

Mort Rosenblum looked at climate change through the eyes of an olive tree in an op-ed he wrote for The New York Times Dec. 23.

April Thompson won an Emily Krauz Staff Endowment Scholarship for fall 2007 from the UA's Staff Advisory Council. The $150 award reimburses her for books and expenses as she works toward a degree at Pima Community College.

Alan Weisman's The World Without Us was named Entertainment Weekly's best nonfiction book of 2007. The pick was part of EW's "Best and Worst of 2007." See the story here.

Student Kudos

Nicole Fagin is representing the state of Arizona as MTV's election correspondent for 2008. The "Choose or Lose" campaign comprises a specially recruited group of 51 citizen journalists Ð one from every state and Washington, D.C. Ð who will cover the 2008 elections from a youth perspective and tailor their reports for mobile devices. Members will contribute weekly, multi-media reports (short form videos, blogs, animation, photos, podcasts) that will be distributed via a soon-to-launch WAP site, MTV Mobile, Think.MTV.com and to the more than 1,800 sites in the Associated Press Online Video Network. The "Street Team '08" program is made possible by a $700,000 Knight News Challenge grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

Nicole Santa Cruz was selected to be a summer intern at The Oregonian.

Alumni Kudos

Dean Knuth '06 was one of two top winners of employee of the year honors at the Arizona Daily Star. Knuth was cited for photos he took for an immigration story that were "beautiful and vivid and telling." Other former students who were honored by the Star included Irene McKisson and Leslie Anne Newell.
