Faculty Kudos – Week of Jan. 5, 2009

A manuscript written by David Cuillier and two co-authors won an international research contest hosted by the journal Open Government. The paper, regarding the effect of the thought of death on public attitudes toward government transparency, was chosen as the best paper submitted to the peer-reviewed electronic journal in 2008, and a cash prize will be shared by Cuillier and co-authors Jeff Joireman of Washington State University and Blythe Duell of Southeastern Oklahoma State University. The article will appear this month in the journal at http://www.opengovjournal.org.

Shahira Fahmy has had chapters in two books accepted for publication in 2009. They are:
• "How could so much produce so little? Foreign affairs reporting in the wake of 9/11." Guy Golan, Thomas J. Johnson and Wayne Wanta (Eds.), International Communication in a Global Age.
• "See no evil, hear no evil, judge as evil? Examining whether Al-Jazeera English-language website users transfer credibility to its satellite network." Guy Golan, Thomas J. Johnson and Wayne Wanta (Eds.), International Communication in a Global Age.

Kevin R. Kemper's paper "Garcetti v. Ceballos and Morse v. Frederick: Two more steps away from academic freedom?" has been accepted for presentation at the American Association of University Professors June 2009 conference in Washington, D.C., on Globalization, Shared Governance and Academic Freedom. This paper extends Kemper's research into the law and doctrine of government speech.

Three faculty members will be taking part in Jan. 23 conference co-sponsored by the Center for Middle Eastern Studies, the School of Journalism, the Department of Anthropology, the Department of Near Eastern Studies, and the Technology and Global Islam Project. The conference, "New Horizons: Obama & The Global Media," will include panel discussions on "Global Media Responses to the Obama Administration," featuring Celeste González de Bustamante and "A Return to Public Discourse in America?," chaired by Maggy Zanger and featuring Alan Weisman.
