Faculty Kudos - Week of Oct. 16, 2006David Cuillier wrote a column titled "The Art of Access" for the October issue of the Society of Professional Journalists' magazine Quill. The column discusses strategies reporters can use to get government officials to provide public records that are open by law. Celeste González de Bustamante will be giving a talk at the School of Information Resources and Library Science's Brown Bag series on Oct. 25.The talk - "Onion Skin and Oxygen: Access and Research at Televisa's Script and Video Archive in Mexico City," - is scheduled from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the SIRLS Multi-purpose Room. The Tombstone Epitaph took home several awards from the Oct. 14 Arizona Newspapers Association contest in Scottsdale. The Epitaph, whose faculty advisor is Bill Greer, earned an honorable mention for departmental news and copy editing excellence. Three 2006 alumni also earned awards: Dana Crudo took third place in features; Emily Kraft won third place in features and photo layout; and James Patrick earned a second place for feature photos. A column Kevin R. Kemper wrote for the July 4 issue of the Arizona Daily Star prompted an invitation to speak at a forum at a retirement community in Green Valley on Oct. 20. He will discuss the importance of freedom of the press in this crucial time in American history. The talk will be broadcast on closed-circuit TV to several hundred residents. Jeannine Relly and Meghna Sabharwal, Arizona State University, presented a co-authored paper titled "Do economic and political governance institutions contribute to transparency?" at the Governance, Institutions and Networks Conference in St. Augustine, Trinidad, Oct. 18-20. Dave Hatfield, editor of Inside Tucson Business, recently enlisted the help of three UA Journalism students to write for their annual Tucson "Up and Comers" feature that hit newsstands Oct. 9. Katie Klein, Valerie Potell and Mitra Taj of Jay Rochlin's Feature Writing course interviewed five up-and- coming business leaders in the Tucson community. Hatfield mentioned the opportunity to write the "Up and Comers" articles while speaking in Rochlin's 411 class. The opportunity has helped build a relationship between Inside Tucson Business and the journalism department, and Hatfield has subsequently accepted several freelance story proposals from students. Martin Rubio was among three staff members of KUAT who garnered 2006 Rocky Mountain Emmy Awards. Rubio and Thomas Kleespie each took home a statuette for co-producing "Medical School Student," a six-minute feature that aired on "Arizona Illustrated" in April. The segment profiles Davy Horner, a cancer survivor who attends medical school at the UA. The awards were in the magazine program-feature/segment category. Several adjunct faculty and alumni were winners at the Arizona Newspapers Association contest Oct. 14 in Scottsdale. Adjunct faculty winners included: Rhonda Bodfield Bloom '92, Arizona Daily Star, first place, best lifestyle feature story; Francisco Medina, Tucson Citizen, first place, best feature photo and third place, best sports photo; and Jim Nintzel, Tucson Weekly, first place, best news story. His piece was an expose that forced a City Council candidate to drop out of the race last year. The Weekly also won third place for community service/journalistic achievement for Nintzel's campaign coverage in general. Alumni winners from the Arizona Daily Star included: Jim Maish '81, honorable mention, best headline; Daniel Scarpinato '04, second place, best news story; Joseph Barrios '97, honorable mention, best news story; Bonnie Henry '81, honorable mention, best column; Benjie Sanders, second place, best news photo; and David Sanders '87, who won two first place awards and one honorable mention, for both news and sports photographs. Other alumni winners included Lindsey Stockton '03, Eastern Arizona Courier, second place and honorable mention for news stories; M.J. Smith, Mohave Valley Daily News, honorable mention, best feature story; Christopher Wuensch '04, The Explorer, third place, best column, first place for best sports coverage, and honorable mention for best sports story; Gary Gaynor, Tucson Citizen, second place, best feature photo; Sheryl Kornman '70, Tucson Citizen, first place, best news story; Chris Limberis (a UA alumnus who died last year), Tucson Weekly, third place, best news story; Leo Banks '77, Tucson Weekly, honorable mention, best lifestyle feature; and Paul Giblin '80, East Valley Tribune, first place, best column, and second place, best sports story.
