Faculty Kudos - Week of Oct. 8, 2007

At last week's Society of Professional Journalists national conference in Washington, D.C., David Cuillier was appointed chairman of the group's national Freedom of Information Committee, after serving the past year as co-vice chair. Also at the conference, Cuillier discussed freedom of information and strategies for accessing public records on a panel about investigative reporting and national security. Susan Knight and several members of the UA's student SPJ chapter also attended the conference.

Kevin R. Kemper's paper "Sustaining journalism and fractal ecology: Exploring a new research agenda for maximizing economy, equity, and ecology for U.S. newspapers" was accepted for the Convergence and Society: Media Ownership, Control, and Consolidation conference on Oct. 11-13 at the University of South Carolina in Columbia. This paper is a part of Kemper's new research emphasis on finding a better business model to preserve journalism and free press for U.S. newspapers.

Linda Lumsden presented a paper entitled, "'Women's Lib Has No Soul'? An Analytical Challenge to Myths Surrounding the Black Press's Coverage of the Women's Liberation Movement, 1968-1973," on Oct. 13 at the American Journalism Historian's Convention in Richmond, Va.
