Kudos - Week of Nov. 12, 2007

Cathy Burch, Gawain Douglas, Chris Conover and Paul Johnson were panelists discussing journalism as a career Nov. 14. The discussion was part of the university's series, Pizza with a Professional, intended for students who were undecided about their major.

David Cuillier wrote a review for the latest issue of the Journal of Mass Media Ethics, critiquing a new book by libertarian journalism scholar John C. Merrill, titled Media, Mission and Morality. On Nov. 12, Cuillier provided freedom of information training to 36 journalists in St. Petersburg, Fla., for the Society of Professional Journalists' Reporters Institute. And his work through SPJ this month included alerting journalists to a provision in the proposed Farm Bill that would make it a criminal offense to publish basic cow directory information. Adjunct Instructor Mark Poepsel has learned he has been accepted to the University of Missouri-Columbia's School of Journalism to pursue his Ph.D. He plans to research planned availability and access issues regarding converged media in regions with historically severe economic inequality. Poepsel will begin in the Fall 2008 and will be funded for three years of study while working as a research assistant and possibly as an instructor. Also, with much help from Lisa Button and the journalism staff, Poepsel conducted a 12-hour (extended to 14-hour) Video Boot Camp for print-focused students. Poepsel led nine outstanding participants through hands-on exercises in video composition, lighting, broadcast-style writing and editing, which culminated in the shooting, writing and editing of brief news packages for many of the students.

Jay Rochlin and students in the Jour 498D Border Beat class will be honored Nov. 21 with the ringing of the bell from the USS Arizona. The bell ringing is conducted on the third Wednesday of each month to honor outstanding university achievements. The online publication Border Beat tied for first place in October at the 2007 Online Journalism Awards. Border Beat won in the Student Journalism category.
