Faculty Kudos – Week of March 9, 2009
David Cuillier spoke March 11 about the importance of public records to journalists at the American Society of Access Professionals national conference in Las Vegas for government Freedom of Information Act officers. That same day he spoke in Phoenix about the importance of transparency in local government at a policy forum hosted by the Goldwater Institute.
Kevin R. Kemper delivered a speech entitled “First Amendment speech rights for students" at Phi Alpha Delta’s School of Rights of Kids on March 7 at the UA. Phi Alpha Delta, a legal fraternity, has a pre-law chapter at the UA that sponsored the event, which drew students, teachers, and parents from local middle schools.
Kim Newton welcomed award-winning photojournalist John DeTarsio into his class March 5. DeTarsio has been named NPPA National Photographer of the Year and has won six national NPPA award and 46 regional Emmys. His visit was sponsored by the Hanson Film Institute and the School of Media Arts in partnership with the School of Journalism.
Jeannine Relly will join the tenure-track faculty as an assistant professor when the new academic year begins in August. This leaves her more time to pursue her research agenda, which includes examining information access laws and policies around the world.
Student Kudos
Alex Dalenberg and Jenna Davis were selected for the 2009 Pulliam Journalism Fellowship at The Arizona Republic. And Lance Madden was selected for an American Society of Magazine Editors summer internship. He will intern at a magazine in New York City. The Pulliam Journalism Fellowship and the ASME internship for college juniors are highly competitive, paid internships.Mack Kearns’ story on the Tucson High robot class that ran in the Feb. 17 issue of the Arizona Daily Star was picked up as member enterprise by the Associated Press. He is a Star apprentice.
