Faculty Kudos of the Week - April 17, 2006

Iris Chyi and H.C. Chang will have their book chapter "Examining the use of and preference for online news in the context of intermedia competition" published in New Opportunities and Challenges of the Internet. Singapore: Marshall Cavendish Academic.

David Cuillier, who joins the department this fall as an assistant professor, wrote one chapter and co-authored two others for the journalism textbook Reporting That Matters: Public Affairs Coverage. Cuillier wrote the chapter titled "Access to Public Records" and co-authored chapters on "Meetings, Speeches and Press Conferences" and "Documents, Databases and Computers". Dave also successfully defended his dissertation this month. Congratulations, Dave!

Susan Knight lectured on "The News Media's Treatment of People With Disabilities" in the College of Education April 18. She also moderated a panel April 20 for the Society of Professional Journalists on "FERPA: Balancing the Public's Right to Know With Students' Right to Privacy." On April 12, Susan was one of 13 University of Arizona faculty members honored by the 2006 Mortar Board for outstanding contributions to the undergraduate experience.

Jeannine Relly will present a paper co-authored with Meghna Sabharwal and Heather Campbell titled "Examining the Influence of Governance in Countries With and Without Access to Information Laws: Is There a Difference?" as a member of the International Law Panel of the Western Social Science Association Conference in Phoenix April 21. Jeannine also will present "Linking political and economic institutions to transparency in countries with Access to Information laws," a paper co-authored with Meghna Sabharwal, on the International Institutions, Property Rights and Human Rights Panel at the Midwest Political Science Association Conference in Chicago April 23.

Jacqueline Sharkey spoke to students on coverage of the Iraq war April 13 as part of the Finley Newswriting Competition.
