Faculty Kudos Week of April 21, 2008Celeste González de Bustamante was invited to participate on a panel held on campus April 24 on the importance of Latinos in journalism. Her talk, "Silences, Crises and Solutions: The Absence of Latinos and Minorities in Journalism," focused on the lack of diversity in media ownership and newsrooms, and how this influences news content and society. The panel was part of a symposium honoring journalist Rubén Salazer who was killed on Aug. 29, 1970, while covering a Chicano anti-war demonstration in East Los Angeles. The symposium was sponsored by the Media, Democracy and Policy Initiative and the UA Mexican American Studies and Research Center. Victoria Tinajero (a 2007 graduate) and Nathan Olivarez-Giles participated as speakers on the panel. González de Bustamante also was interviewed April 20 for Latino-Vibe Radio (95.1) in Phoenix about Latinos and minorities working in the news media.Alan Weisman wrote a piece titled "Three Planetary Futures" on environmental change as a Web exclusive for Vanity Fair. Read it here. Student KudosJournalism major Steve Meth was on site at the Olympic torch protests in Kalua Lumpur. His photos were published online in the Australian news.Two journalism majors were featured in the May/June 2008 issue of Arizona Foothills Magazine for an article titled "Tucson's Tremendous Moms, Dads and Grads." Mike Ritter will be covering the Arizona Diamondbacks this summer for MLB.com, and Nicole Fagin is Arizona's representative for MTV's "Choose or Lose Street Team 2008."
