Faculty Kudos – Week of April 6, 2009

Shahira Fahmy was a panelist for “Insights Into the Arab World,” moderated by Terry Anderson at the School of Journalism and Telecommunications at the University of Kentucky April 7.

Linda Lumsden discussed her research on anarchist and socialist newspapers and magazines in the decade before World War I at a journalism research colloquium March 26 in the School of Journalism. The talk, "‘Striking Images’: Visual Rhetoric of the Radical Press, 1908-1918," focused on the use of imagery of anarchist and socialist periodicals to telegraph views on a range of social issues: labor, politics, gender, race, free speech, and war.

Alan Weisman will be the featured speaker at the University of Arizona’s commencement ceremony for graduate students on May 15. Candidates for master's, specialist and doctoral degrees will be honored during the Friday night ceremony, which will also include recognition of honorary degrees, alumni achievement awards and graduate student awards. Graduate students from all colleges are invited to participate in this ceremony.

Several faculty members in the School of Journalism spoke to students enrolled in the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute March 2-April 13. Topics and speakers included: “Role of journalism and journalism schools,” Jacqueline Sharkey; “Investigative/project reporting,” Terry Wimmer; “Government secrecy and public access to information,” David Cuillier; “Critical analysis of television and visual media,” Celeste González de Bustamante; “Legal issues facing the news media,” Kevin R. Kemper; “Coverage of international conflicts,” Maggy Zanger and Mort Rosenblum; and “Delivering news in the Internet Age,” Jay Rochlin and Jacqueline Sharkey.

Lisa Button, Jeannine Relly and Karen Weaver met with 14 students from Tucson GEAR UP to talk about the School of Journalism’s program and clubs, diversity in the field of journalism and the Journalism Workshop for Arizona High School Students that the School hosts each summer. GEAR UP helps secondary school students stay in school, graduate from high school, and enter college, university, or other postsecondary programs.

Student Kudos

Candace Begody was among 80 students nationally selected as a Udall Scholar. Udall scholarships go to young leaders who are committed to working in careers in either tribal policy or healthcare, and the designation comes with up to $5,000 for one year. Read about it here.
