Kudos - Week of May 28, 2007

A large billboard touting the UA journalism department's international focus is getting attention around Tucson. The billboard was donated by UA alumnus Manny Molina, founder and publisher of Latino Future magazine, in partnership with Clear Channel Outdoor. It includes the phrase "Exploring Borders in the Information Age" as well as the department's Web address.

The billboard's location rotates. It has been at Broadway Boulevard and Camino Seco on Tucson's east side, on the west side of S. Sixth Avenue, just north of Ajo Way, and on Tanque Verde Road, between Pima and Wilmot. See a picture of it here.

Bill Greer will lead the Journalism Diversity Workshop for Arizona High School Students June 2-13 in the department. The department has hosted the program for more than 25 years. The approximately dozen students who attend get a well-rounded look at journalism and publish a newspaper at the end of the workshop. Professors David Cuillier and Terry Wimmer also will speak to students. Graduate John deDios helps lead the workshop.

The Arizona Daily Star published on the top of its Sunday front page on May 24 a story written by journalism major Michael McKisson and Star reporter Erica Meltzer, based on McKisson's work in the spring computer-assisted reporting class. For his class project, McKisson acquired sewer smell complaint data from Pima County and found that stinky vapors are spreading farther through Tucson. He interviewed residents and officials to examine the problem and what might be done about it.
