Kudos Week of May 7, 2007

David Cuillier was awarded the Nafziger-White Dissertation Award, given by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication for the best dissertation earned in 2005-06 in the field of journalism and mass communication. Cuillier's dissertation, based on seven surveys, explored public attitudes toward press access to government records and examined the importance of civic engagement in support for freedom of information. He will receive a cash prize and plaque at the AEJMC national convention Aug. 11 in Washington, D.C.

Celeste González de Bustamante was one of two faculty members in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences to receive a Faculty Summer 2007 Development Grant Award. She will use the $5,000 grant, from the Social and Behavioral Sciences Research Institute, to conduct preliminary research in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The grant also includes workshops on writing winning research proposals, and is intended to help faculty develop their proposals before they are submitted to external funding agencies.

Susan Knight was invited to be a leadership facilitator at the Society of Professional Journalists/Ted Scripps Leadership Institute in Indianapolis in June.

Linda Lumsden published an article entitled, "The Essentialist Agenda of the 'Woman's Angle' in Cold War Washington: The Case of Associated Press Reporter Ruth Cowan" in the Spring 2007 issue of Journalism History. She also wrote an entry on suffragist Inez Milholland for "Facts on File" and another on activist Josephine St. Pierre Ruffin, the first African-American female newspaper publisher, for the Women in World History encyclopedia. Both will be published at the end of the year.

Jeannine Relly won the Mortar Board National College Senior Honor Society Hall of Fame Award as the UA's outstanding female faculty member of the year. The award recognizes a faculty member who has demonstrated leadership, promoted high standards in the academic community, and has contributed outstanding service both to students and the overall welfare of the University. Students from throughout campus are asked to nominate faculty members.
