Faculty Kudos of the Week - May 8, 2006
Several of the department's adjunct professors were honored May 6 by the Arizona Press Club for their work at the Arizona Daily Star. Tom Beal won second place for science and technology reporting; Joseph Barrios won second place for business enterprise reporting and business beat reporting; and Rhonda Bodfield Bloom won second place for slice-of-life reporting.
David Cuillier, who will be joining the UA faculty this fall, is second author for a poster presentation at the Association for Psychological Science annual conference May 26 in New York City. The paper is titled "Effect of mortality salience on support for first amendment rights in an age of terrorism." The other authors are Washington State University graduate student Blythe Duell and WSU psychology professor Jeff Joireman.
Cuillier will present a Great Idea for Teaching poster at the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication national conference Aug. 2 in San Francisco. His "Dream House" idea, one of 25 chosen out of 85 entries, teaches journalism students how to access government records by backgrounding a house for sale, also practical in their personal lives. He credited a 2002 GIFT regarding access presented by Terry Wimmer, who also will be joining the UA faculty this fall. Cuillier was a GIFT scholar in 2004 for an interviewing video idea.
Jeannine Relly served as an article reviewer for Perspectives in Public Affairs, a journal of student and alumni research works from the School of Public Affairs at Arizona State University. She also is co-editing the lead article for the upcoming journal. Relly was featured in Jim Kiser's May 12 column in the Arizona Daily Star for winning the Harelson Teaching Award for three straight years.
Alan Weisman was featured in the "Faculty Spotlight" section of the latest issue of ISPE News (Institute for the Study of Planet Earth). The article previewed his forthcoming book -- to be published in 2007 -- The World Without Us, which looks at the future of the Earth if humans were wiped out.
Lastly, the department's re-accreditation was noted in a May 11 story in the Arizona Daily Star.
