Faculty/Staff Kudos of the Week - June 5, 2006
The journalism department's co-sponsorship of a June 2 event honoring slain investigative reporter Don Bolles was covered by Fox 11 TV and picked up by KVOA-Channel 4. Susan Knight spearheaded sponsorship of the event, which was co-hosted by the UA and professional chapters of SPJ. Susan also served as emcee at the gathering. Fox 11 interviewed Kate Harrison, the department's program coordinator, and Steve Emerine, who worked in journalism, politics and public relations in his long Tucson career and knew Bolles personally. He also taught as an adjunct in the department.
The journalism department was mentioned in several news stories June 6-7 concerning the demolition of the Franklin Building. Several television stations shot video of the slow demise of the department's former home, and the Arizona Daily Star ran a story and photos -- one featuring the department's new business manager, Phil Nopper -- June 7. Iris Chyi and George Sylvie's paper "One Product, Two Markets: How Geography Differentiates Online Newspaper Audiences" has been accepted by the Newspaper Division, AEJMC Annual Convention, San Francisco, August 2006. The paper also won the International Newspaper Marketing Association Award.
Jeannine Relly will present a paper in August on a law division panel at the AEJMC conference in San Francisco. The paper is titled "Policy issue networks and the U.S. Freedom of Information Act: An examination of 50 years of Congressional testimony."
