UA journalism professor will speak on International Journalism at Distinguished Lecture SeriesA University of Arizona journalism professor will give a talk called "The Global Village is a Complex Place! Helping Students Thrive in a Multi-Cultural World" as part of the University's Distinguished Lecture Series March 21.Maggy Zanger, an associate professor of practice in the UA Department of Journalism, will speak from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Arizona Inn, 2200 E. Elm Street. The cost is $25, which includes lunch. To request a registration form or for more information, please call 520-626-3445. U.S. journalists increasingly are called upon to "parachute" into extremely complicated, dangerous, and culture-specific situations outside North America, and students must be prepared to function in this environment and provide context and in-depth reporting for readers and viewers, said Zanger. In 2005, she began teaching at the UA after nearly six years working in the Middle East. Zanger covered the U.S. invasion of Iraq, working as an analyst for NBC News and writing for the Cairo Times. She stayed to become the Iraq director for the Institute for War and Peace Reporting (IWPR), starting journalism programs in Baghdad and Sulaimaniyah to train Iraqis to be independent reporters. At the UA she teaches "Media Coverage of International Crises," which examines how Western media report conflict and humanitarian crises, with an emphasis on the Arab/Muslim world. She also teaches "Community Journalism: El Independiente," a capstone course in which students produce a bi-lingual newspaper for Spanish speakers in Tucson. The Distinguished Lecture Series features prominent scholars in the Colleges of Fine Arts, Science, and Social and Behavioral Sciences. It is co-sponsored by The Presidents Club.
