Students Claire Landowski and Victoria Harben placed first and second, respectively, in the Fall 2005 Finley Best Beginning News Writers Contest.

Lawdowski earned $750. Harben won $350. No third-place award was given.

Students had to write a story on deadline after listening to a presentation by Pima County Administrator Chuck Huckelberry on the Sonoran Desert Conservation Plan.

Contestants were allowed to bring a dictionary, stylebook and background clips. Criteria that the judges used included accuracy, story structure, story content, lead, and the quality of questions asked. Judging the Journalism 205 contest were faculty members Susan Knight, Jeannine Relly and Jane See White.

The contest is named for the late Mark Finley, who established the award. He was a UA graduate who was a Boston journalist, and assistant to the publisher of Hearst's Boston newspaper for 17 years.
