Two UA School of Journalism alumni win prestigious Polk Awards

Two former students from the University of Arizona School of Journalism were among the winners of 14 George Polk Awards, announced Feb. 16 by Long Island University.

Ryan Gabrielson and Paul Giblin won for a five-part series they wrote for The East Valley Tribune on Maricopa County sheriff Joe Arpaio. The series, "Reasonable Doubt: A look into Arpaio's immigration campaign," investigated how police response times suffered because of stepped-up efforts by Arpaio to focus on undocumented immigrants in the Phoenix area.

Giblin, a 1988 graduate of the UA School of Journalism, and Gabrielson, who attended the UA but didn't graduate, both wrote for the Arizona Daily Wildcat. Giblin is now a senior political editor and co-founder of The Arizona Guardian, according to a story in The Tribune.

Long Island University established the Polk Awards in 1949 to memorialize the CBS News correspondent who was killed covering a civil war in Greece. The awards will be presented at a luncheon at the Roosevelt Hotel in Manhattan on April 16.
