UA School of Journalism announces Steve Emerine Scholarship

The University of Arizona School of Journalism is accepting donations for a scholarship honoring longtime Tucson journalist Steve Emerine.

Emerine had a long career in journalism and politics in Tucson and shared his knowledge of both with UA journalism students over four decades. He died Feb. 13 at age 73.

“Steve touched many lives in the Tucson community as a journalist, politician, consultant, educator and friend,” said Jacqueline Sharkey, School of Journalism director. The scholarship will offer financial support to a student interested in public affairs reporting.

“We’re pleased to be able to offer some financial assistance to a journalism student who — like Steve — believes in holding government accountable by asking tough questions,” said Sharkey.

In the course of his career, Emerine held posts at the Tucson Citizen, the Arizona Daily Star, in county government, and at the University of Arizona. At the time of his death, he operated a private consulting business, wrote a weekly column for Inside Tucson Business, and was a regular guest on KUAT-TV’s "Friday Roundtable" and on the "John C. Scott Show" on KVOI-AM.

To donate to the Steve Emerine Scholarship, send a check with Emerine’s name in the memo line and made payable to “UA Foundation/Journalism,” to:
