High Country News Internship

About the Internship

Every year, High Country News offers four to six internship positions, each six months long, starting in July and January. We provide free housing and a $220-per-week stipend for interns. To help defray moving costs, an additional $500 travel stipend is available upon successful completion of the internship. 

Qualifications & Requirements

This competitive internship requires:

  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent in journalism, English or related field is also required
  • Writing and communication skills to communicate ideas to various audiences
  • Strong curiosity
  • Attention to detail
  • Understand Western issues
  • Out-of-box thinking to short news and analysis

How to Apply

Deadline: Winter/Spring interns apply by Nov. 1, 2019. Summer/Fall interns apply by Mar. 15, 2020.

Applicants should prepare the following materials:

  • A cover letter
  • A résumé
  • Contact information for three references (phone and email)
  • Three writing samples (plus multimedia samples, if applicable)
