2023 finalist photos for Gyorke Award

Na'ilah Lockhart won the fall 2023 Drew Gyorke Memorial Photojournalism Award for her photo of a partygoer bathed in blue light.

Beatriz Mojardin took second place with a photo of students swinging on an art installation outside of the University of Arizona’s Main Library, while Jake George took third place with his photo of a basketball game at the South Gym.

The award has recognized the best photojournalism work by students each semester since 2013 and honors Drew Gyorke, an adventurer and aspiring photojournalist who died that year while attending the university. Find a list of past winners here.

This semester’s awardees were selected from 12 student finalists in Professor Rick Wiley’s JOUR 203 photojournalism class at the School of Journalism.

All of the finalists’ photos will be printed and displayed on the third floor of the Louise Foucar Marshall Building.

The award comes with a $200 prize for first place, $125 for second, and $75 for third.

Kim Newton, professor emeritus in the School of Journalism; Kelly Presnell, photojournalist at the Arizona Daily Star; and Mike Christy, director of sports photography for Arizona Athletics, served as this semester’s judges.
