Jim Patten rejoins the University of Arizona journalism faculty as an adjunct instructor. Beginning fall 2006, the former faculty member and department head will teach Reporting the News.

Patten retired from the UA in 2002 after nearly 20 years with the journalism department, including 10 as department head. He became the first UA journalism professor ever to earn a named professorship when he was named the Soldwedel Family Professor of Journalism in 1998.

Patten was cited for outstanding teaching by the UA College of Social and Behavioral Sciences and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. He recently was elected to the Hall of Fame of the Arizona Interscholastic Press Association.

Patten worked as a reporter at newspapers throughout the country, including the Des Moines Register, Omaha World-Herald and Philadelphia Inquirer. He earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Nebraska and a master's in journalism from Iowa State University. He also is winner of the University of Nebraska's highest teaching award.
