Sal Quijada is a California native who began his television news career in high school answering phones for KCBS-TV2 in Los Angeles.
His first on-air television news job was in Odessa, Texas, where one of the stories he covered was the failed U.S. Congressional bid of George W. Bush. A big part of the Odessa experience was the culture shock, says Quijada -- going from the Los Angeles newsroom staff of 380 to the Odessa newsroom staff of 8.
Quijada spent four years at Channel 10 in Phoenix and another four at KVOA-TV in Tucson, where he was awarded the First Amendment citation from the American Civil Liberties Union. In 1990, the Arizona State Bar gave Quijada an Award of Appreciation for educating the public about the legal system and Tucson's sanctuary trials. For the last 17 years, he continued reporting at KGUN-TV9 and concluded his local news tenure in January 2008.
