PEOPLE: JAMES MITCHELL
James C. MitchellOffice - Marshall 336 Telephone - 621-3189 email - mitchell@u.arizona.edu James C. Mitchell is an assistant professor who worked in broadcast journalism for 25 years. He was a reporter for KABC-TV in Los Angeles and WCBS-TV in New York City, and was news director of KHJ Radio in Los Angeles. He spent much of his career anchoring newscasts at WHAS-TV in Louisville, Ky., a recipient of the Society of Professional Journalists award for best spot news coverage in the nation. A member of the State Bar of Arizona, Professor Mitchell has focused his research and teaching on journalism law and television news writing. His most recent article, "Rosenbloom’s Ghost: How a Discredited Decision Lives On in Libel Law," appeared in the University of Idaho Law Review in conjunction with the law college’s 2004 First Amendment symposium, where Professor Mitchell was a featured speaker. His previous article, "The Accidental Purist: Reclaiming the Gertz All Purpose Public Figure Doctrine in the Age of Celebrity Journalism," was published in the Loyola University of Los Angeles Entertainment Law Review. He has written articles about news media and current affairs for The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, and the Los Angeles Times. Mitchell's novels, Lovers Crossing and Choke Point, received critical praise, including starred reviews in the American Library Association's book review journal, Booklist. Professor Mitchell earned his Bachelor of Science degree at Regents College, University of the State of New York, and his Juris Doctor degree at the University of Louisville School of Law.
