Jeannine E. Relly is an assistant professor of journalism and an affiliated faculty member of the Center for Latin American Studies. She also is the journalism coordinator for senior honors theses.
Relly worked as a journalist for more than a dozen years. She has reported for The Associated Press, the Arizona Daily Star, the Roanoke Times & World-News, several newsweeklies and magazines. Relly wrote stories from the United States, the Caribbean and Mexico on politics, business, the environment, criminal justice, human trafficking and other social issues. Her stories on Indian gaming and the dangers facing journalists in Mexico won awards from the Arizona Press Club.
In 2008, Relly served on the staff of The New York Times Student Journalism Institute that was based in Tucson. She assisted in coordinating diversity initiative programs in the School of Journalism for five years.
Relly teaches a reporting and a research methods course. She received the Hugh and Jan Harelson Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2004, 2005 and 2006. In 2007, she was recognized with The University of Arizona outstanding female faculty member of the year award through the Mortar Board National College Senior Honor Society.
Her research focuses on access-to-information policies in the United States and other countries and the political environment for journalists in developing nations with freedom-of-information laws.
Relly received her doctorate from the School of Public Affairs at Arizona State University and her master's degree in journalism from the University of Arizona, with a research focus on environmental reporting. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Virginia Tech.
