OUR PUBLICATIONS
UA journalism students aren't just learning how to put together
newspapers - they're doing it. Students handle every phase of
production for two publications that are vital sources of news and
information for two Arizona communities. By producing real-world
newspapers, the students allow their work to be judged by faculty and
the public at large. Students also develop critical thinking, research,
visual communication and writing skills and learn to deal with the legal
and ethical issues that confront professional journalists.
The Tombstone Epitaph and the El Independiente are
distributed to specific localities in southern Arizona and are available
online.
The Cursor is distributed on campus, mailed to our alumni and
also available online.
The Chronicle is mailed to the program's sponsors and made
available for the students and their families.
EL INDEPENDIENTE El Independiente is the
student-produced newspaper serving South Tucson and the only bilingual
newspaper in the country that is produced by students in a real
community on a regular basis. Students work as an editorial staff to
create the paper for a community of 7,500 that is about 85 percent
Hispanic.
THE TOMBSTONE EPITAPH They call Tombstone "the town too
tough to die," and for more than a century, The Tombstone Epitaph has
been part of the area's colorful history. Students have produced the
local edition since 1975 as part of the Community Journalism class.
ARIZONA CAT'S EYE Arizona Cat's Eye is the capstone course for
students concentrating in broadcast journalism. Through extensive
hands-on experience students write, report, shoot, produce, and edit
hard news and feature stories for broadcast. The best stories of the
semester will air as part of Arizona Cat's Eye, the department's news
magazine featured on KUAT-TV (PBS), Channel 6.
THE CAT SCAN First appearing on the Internet May 3, 2006, The
Cat Scan is a student-ru nonline magazine offering feature and news
stories of interest to the University of Arizona and Tucson communities.
BORDER BEAT Border Beat was launched in spring 2007 and offers news,
insights and resources for those interested in the U.S.-Mexico border
region.
THE CURSOR Twice every year, The Cursor provides news for
and about Arizona journalism alumni. Read department news, student
accomplishments as well as personal and professional updates from
graduating class members in The Cursor's Alumni Notes.
THE CHRONICLE The Chronicle is an eight-page newspaper produced
by students attending the Journalism Diversity Workshop for Arizona High
School Students, hosted each summer by The University of Arizona
Department of Journalism.
ACADEMIC INTEGRITY HANDBOOK The department requires this
guide for all reporting students. It includes sections on academic
integrity policy, plagiarism, fabrication, collaboration and the UA Code
of Conduct.

procedures for use in reporting and editing classes at The University of
