JOURNALISM STUDENTS : ACADEMICSThe Department of Journalism is dedicated to providing a curriculum that prepares students to face the complex challenges confronting journalists in the 21st century. Students must have the critical thinking, research, and communication skills -- and the background in the rights and responsibilities of the press -- that are necessary for making important contributions to the profession. The role of the news media is to provide the objective explanation of events and issues upon which so many important political, economic and social policies are based. As Lee Bollinger, president of Columbia University, once said, "Journalism is one of the most important professions in the world; it is the principal way for us to mediate between the world of actions, the world of expertise and the general public."
