NEW STUDENTS : ADMISSIONS

Undergraduate

The University of Arizona Department of Journalism currently has about 650 students in its program who come from all backgrounds and fields of study. Instructors are all former or current working journalists who offer students plenty of opportunities to learn by doing.

Declaring a Journalism major: In Spring 2006, the university's Faculty Senate unanimously approved the journalism department's pre-major -- a set of requirements students must meet to declare the journalism major. Read more. For questions, see one of the department's advisors.

The journalism department has temporarily suspended the journalism minor. It will be resumed sometime in the future. In the meantime, students interested in a thematic minor or journalism education minor should contact a department advisor.

Graduate

The journalism department reopened admission to its graduate program in late fall 2007. Classes begin in fall 2008.

The intensive, experiential program leads to a Master of Arts degree with a major in journalism. The department welcomes students to its professionally oriented curriculum, which offers two tracks to accommodate both professional journalists and those new to the field. It trains students without journalism experience in the skills and theories of the journalism profession. It also gives working professionals greater knowledge and understanding of the legal, ethical and management challenges that confront the future leaders of today's rapidly changing media environment.
