Becoming a Journalism Major
Incoming Freshmen and Transfer Students:Incoming students who want to become Journalism Majors can indicate that on their application or at Freshman Orientation. These students will be designated Pre-Journalism Majors (PRJR) until they meet the following four prerequisites for the Journalism Major:
1. Complete two semesters of first-year English Composition with a grade of B or better in each
semester. Composition courses are ENGL 101 and 102, 103H and 104H, 107 and 108, or 109H (one semester
course combined with AP credit).
2. Complete one semester of University-level Math with a grade of B or better. (The requirement
is met with UA MATH 105 Math in Modern Society, or MATH 112 College Algebra Concepts and Applications
or any higher level course.
3. Earn a minimum 2.5 overall GPA including those courses underway in the semester you make
application for the major.
4. Reach sophomore standing (that is, at least 30 units completed) by the beginning of the semester
in which you take your first Journalism courses.
Current UA students wishing to change to Pre-Journalism:
If a student intends to pursue the Journalism Major but does not have all of the prerequisites complete they should attend a Journalism Information Session to declare Pre-Journalism as their major. A student has a two year (4 semester) time limit to complete all of the pre-major requirements and advance into the Journalism Major. Following is the schedule for the Journalism Information Sessions for Spring 09. All sessions will be held in Marshall Rm 311. Click here for a map to the Marshall Building. No RSVP is required. Please be on time and bring a current SAPR.

Current UA students wishing to change to Journalism:
Any student who has all of the Pre-major requirements completed should see the journalism advisor, Karen Weaver, to make application to the major.
She holds walk-in hours Monday to Friday, 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. in Marshall Rm. 323A.
