JOURNALISM STUDENTS : INTERNSHIPSJournalism Department students have many opportunities for internships at newspapers, magazines, television and radio stations, and other media organizations both locally and nationally. The lament of all new college graduates is that employers only want to hire people with actual working experience. The answer is to gain that experience through internships. The department has an extensive internship program that places students with news media in Tucson and all across the country. The goal is to encourage all students to gain practical experience through at least one internship while they are in the department. Many journalism students begin by working with campus media. At the University of Arizona, students produce a daily newspaper (The Arizona Daily Wildcat), radio (KAMP Student Radio), television (UATV) programming and a magazine (RedBlue magazine). In the community, students are engaged in news, sports and promotion for the two Tucson daily papers, several weekly newspapers, several magazine publishers and numerous radio and television stations. The Arizona Daily Star, The Tucson Citizen, KVOA-TV, KGUN-TV, and KOLD-TV are among the generous community partners that enhance our students' learning opportunities. The University's own public television station, KUAT, also provides unique internships for outstanding students who are interested in longer form news and public affairs broadcasting. To receive academic credit, students must coordinate their internships with the department's Academic Advisor. Please consult with the advisor to be sure that the contemplated internship meets department standards as a rigorous learning experience.
