NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF HISPANIC JOURNALISTSNAHJ, established nationally in 1984, is dedicated to the recognition and professional advancement of Hispanics in the news industry, says its Web site. Only four other universities around the country host chapters. They are Brooklyn College, Florida International University, Syracuse University, and the University of Missouri-Columbia. Membership in the NAHJ University of Arizona Student Chapter is open to any students and faculty members at the university. For more information, contact Jeannine Relly, assistant professor of practice in the journalism department, at 621-7556. In January 2008, the UA journalism department hosted 20 student journalists from around the country for the New York Times Student Journalism Institute. One reason the UA was selected to host the prestigious institute was due to its active NAHJ chapter. In fact, four UA student members of NAHJ were among those 20 selected nationally to participate in the institute. Executive board members elected for 2007-08 are: Matt Andazola, president; Lorena Barraza, vice president; Dalina Castellanos, secretary; and founding co-president Nate Olivarez-Giles, treasurer.
