Rocky Baier captured the Mark Finley Gold Pen Award in the school's fall 2017 best beginning news writing contest on Nov. 28.

Zachary Ogden placed second and Owen Zerambo finished third after 17 JOUR 205 students participated in the contest. Baier will receive $1,000 in scholarship money, followed by Ogden with $750 and Zerambo with $500. All 17 participants will received engraved pens.

Students had an hour to write a story after a talk and interview session with Richard Elías, a member of the Pima County Board of Supervisors, who addressed the state of roads and taxes in Pima County.

Professors Susan Knight and Jeannine Relly, and adjunct instructors Tom Beal and Brett Fera judged the competition.

The contest is named for the late Mark Finley, a UA grad who was a journalist and assistant to the publisher of Hearst's Boston newspaper for 17 years.

The three students will be honored at the School of Journalism’s Just Desserts event in May.
