Sophomore Hannah Dahl captured the Mark Finley Gold Pen Award in the school's spring 2017 best beginning news writing contest on April 17.
Junior Gabrielle Mix placed second and junior Michaela Webb finished third after 15 students in JOUR 205 participated in the contest. Dahl will receive $1,000 in scholarship money, followed by Mix with $750 and Webb with $500. The three will received engraved pens.
Students had an hour to write a story after a talk and interview session with Adelita Grijalva, a board member of the Tucson Unified School District and daughter of U.S. Rep. Raul Grijalva, D-Ariz.
Professors Susan Knight, Jeannine Relly and Maggy Zanger judged the competition.
"The judges agreed the stories were some of the best we’ve seen in several semesters," Knight said.
The contest is named for the late Mark Finley, a UA grad who was a journalist and assistant to the publisher of Hearst's Boston newspaper for 17 years.
The three students will be honored at the School of Journalism’s Just Desserts event on Thursday, May 4, at 4:30 p.m., at the Arizona Historical Society, 949 E. Second St., just north of the Marshall Building.
