Schmidt wins fall 2015 Gyorke photo contest

Tobey Schmidt captured first place in the fall 2015 Drew Gyorke Memorial Fund Photo Contest for her picture of a rock climber on top of Hitchcock Pinnacle on Mount Lemmon.

Courtney Talak took second for her All Souls Procession photo and Cherie Cole finished third with a volleyball action shot in the contest, which had 12 finalists from professor Kim Newton's JOUR 203 class. All 12 images are now hanging on the J-school hallway wall in front of Newton's office 327 (third floor, Marshall Building, 845 N. Park Ave.).

Gyorke, an adventurer and aspiring photojournalist at UA, died his junior year in a May 2013 car accident. The endowed award named after him recognizes the best beginning photojournalism students. (Click HERE to see past winners and photos.)
