Internships: Feb. 16, 2017

Renée Schafer Horton, Internship Coordinator

Feb. 16, 2017

Dear students:

Happy Thursday!

The sign up link for the Spring Internship Fair, happening 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, March 3 here in the Marshall Building, is live! (Drum roll, please.) Here are the instructions:

  • When you go to the document, choose a time for an interview and write your name in the box with that time, after the time that is listed. Example: 9 a.m. Renee S. Horton.
  • Scroll to the right in the document to see all times available. Do not remove any other student's name. Read all information provided by the recruiters, and follow their instructions.
  • If you chose an afternoon appointment and morning appointments are available, the recruiter has the right to request you move to the morning so he/she doesn't have large gaps in schedule. So do everyone a favor and fill in earliest slots first, so you know you’ll be seen.
  • Everyone except Experience AZ Outdoor Online Magazine is having 15-minute interviews. Experience AZ is having 30-minute interviews, so plan carefully.
  • Screen shot your appointments on your phone so you are not freaking out the day of the internship fair not knowing when your appointments are.
  • All recruiters assume you will bring a current résumé and copies of your clips. If you are a broadcast or photojournalism student, they assume you will come with your laptop open to your YouTube channel or your online portfolio. All these interviews are only 15 minutes long (with one exception), and so do not (repeat: do not) make a bad impression by wasting the recruiters’ time while you try to load your video/photo images.
  • Dress for success – something like this without the creepy fake smiles. No see-through anything, no underwear of any kind showing, nothing wrinkled for goodness sake.
  • If you are a Native American or a student interested in Native issues, sign up for the Navajo Times recruiter. This is a killer internship – and one of the few paid ones available – with a nationally-known newspaper. Think Dakota Access Pipeline controversy and realize how working for a Native paper could help expand your horizons and reporting ability.

KOLD is coming to recruit Thursday March 2 because their recruiter can’t come Friday. The sign up link for summer and fall internship interviews with KOLD is here.

SENIOR/GRAD STUDENTS graduating in May: The job-prep media panel session is next week, 5- 7 p.m. in room 344, Tuesday, Feb. 21. Bring a couple hard copies of your résumé and cover letter so you can take notes on them as we go through the presentation and then you’ll have an extra or two to pass out to the media if they are willing to take it. Go here to sign up right this second!

And finally: There are a ton of new internships and some jobs for May grads listed below, so read and apply! And remember the large bulletin board by the restrooms/elevator where there are internships in marketing/PR.
