Internships: Feb. 23, 2017

Renée Schafer Horton, Internship Coordinator

Feb. 23, 2017

Dear students:

In preparation for next Friday’s internship fair and for getting jobs, please note: In business letters of any kind, including cover letters, the salutation should be: “Dear Mr. Jones” or “Dear Ms. Smith”. I’ve been seeing a lot of cover letters with “Dear Joe Smith” or, even, “Dear Ms. Sally Jones” and that is incorrect. So, remember: never “first name, last name” in a salutation.

  • The sign up link for the Internship Fair (8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, March 3 here in the Marshall Buildingis here! There are still lots of openings (highlighted in green), which means somehow you haven’t heard the news: Without at least one summer internship and/or two internships during the school year, you will not get a job after graduation. I cannot stress this reality enough. Do your future self a favor and sign up for interviews!
  • Remember: KOLD is coming to recruit Thursday March 2 because their recruiter can’t come to Friday’s internship fair. The sign up link for this station is here.
  • May grads – make sure you meet with the Arizona Republic, the AP, Wick and Navajo Times even though they are only looking for interns. You want to get your name on their radar so they can see your work and so you have a direct contact into those companies and can keep in touch after you graduate. Networking, networking, networking.
  • Every sophomore, junior or senior who lives in Phoenix should be interviewing with the Times Media group recruiter so you can intern at one of the two papers they have up in Phoenix this summer. They are seeking a minimum of three interns. Don’t let the positions go to ASU students!!!

See bottom of this email for everything else about the internship fair (what to wear, what to bring, etc.)

·        All recruiters assume you will bring a current résumé and copies of your clips. If you are a broadcast or photojournalism student, they assume you will come with your laptop open to your YouTube channel or your online portfolio. All these interviews are only 15 minutes long (with one exception), and so do not make a bad impression by wasting the recruiters’ time while you try to load your video/photo images.

·        If you chose an afternoon appointment and morning appointments are available, the recruiter has the right to request you move to the morning so he/she doesn't have large gaps in schedule. So do everyone a favor and fill in earliest slots first, so you know you’ll be seen.

·        Everyone except Experience AZ Outdoor Online Magazine is having 15-minute interviews. Experience AZ is having 30-minute interviews, so plan carefully.

·        Screen shot your appointments on your phone so you are not freaking out the day of the internship fair not knowing when your appointments are.

·        Dress for success – something like this without the creepy fake smiles. No see-through anything, no underwear of any kind showing, nothing wrinkled. Plan ahead. Do your outfit this weekend and have it hanging and ready to go for next Friday.

·        If you are a Native American student or a student interested in Native American issues, sign up for the Navajo Times recruiter. This is a killer internship – and one of the few paid ones available – with a nationally-known newspaper. Think Dakota Access Pipeline controversy and realize how working for a Native paper could help expand your horizons and reporting ability.
