Association for Women in Sports Media Summer Internship/Scholarship program.

Deadline: Oct. 31. Even though they list on website “summer 2016” I’ve been assured they are offering these for summer 2017 – just apply via link above. Seven internships that go along with seven scholarships available for summer 2017: four newspaper/magazine/online, one broadcast, one broadcast production and one public relations. Interns receive a $1,000 scholarship and complimentary registration and lodging at AWSM’s annual convention and lodging at AWSM’s annual convention.

Sports Journalism Institute Internships

Overseas Press Club Scholarship ($2,000 – or funding to go overseas in an internship)

Deadline: Dec. 1. For students wanting to do international reporting. They have very specific requirements so make sure you read everything at link below. This is an outstanding opportunity for graduate and undergraduate students wanting to work abroad. The Foundation selects up to 11 scholars and pays travel and living expenses for them to intern at foreign bureaus at such leading news organization as the Associated Press, Reuters, GlobalPost, Wall Street Journal and Forbes and at foreign English-language media companies like the South China Morning Post and Khmer Times. Students win either a $2,000 grant or funding for their overseas experience.


NPR Kroc Fellowship: ($40,000 for the year) PAID

Deadline: Dec. 31. For current seniors or recent graduates, perfect for our broadcast students wanting to work in news. If you’ve done work at AZPM you should apply for this! Candidates should be close to completing a undergraduate or graduate degree, or have earned a degree no more than one year prior to December 31. Kroc Fellows must be able to demonstrate exceptional potential and drive.


The AAAS Pitts Family Foundation Minority Science Writers Internship PAID

Deadline: Feb. 1, 2017. For undergraduates who are interested in journalism as a career and who want to learn about science writing. In addition to improving their skills, the program seeks to make a dent in the demographics of the profession: Although science is a global activity, the journalists who cover it don't reflect that diversity. Funded by the Pitts Family Foundation, the internship takes place each summer at the Washington, D.C. headquarters of AAAS's Science magazine, the largest interdisciplinary journal in the world. Interns spend ten weeks at Science under the guidance of award-winning reporters and editors practicing what science writers do for a living. They have a chance to meet leading scientists, attend conferences and hearings, and cover breaking news. Interns are expected to contribute to all facets of the news operation, including writing bylined articles for the print magazine and online news service, engaging in social media, and contributing to other news products. Interns receive a weekly stipend as well as the cost of a round-trip ticket to and from Washington, D.C. The internship runs from early June to mid-August. This year's application deadline is Feb. 1, 2017. To be eligible, applicants must be enrolled in an undergraduate academic program at the time they submit their application.


Wick Communications Summer Internships PAID

Deadline: April 1, 2017. Wick Co., Inc. will have a limited number of internships available for the summer of 2017 at its various daily newspapers. The location of each is to be determined by the Wick Internship Committee. Applicants must be ready to locate to any of the Wick sites although the applicant’s location preference will be considered. (See the Wick locations at The internship will be for up to 10 weeks based on the availability of the intern. Interns will be paid $9.00 per hour ($360 per week) and overtime. The interns will not qualify for benefits due to their short tenure. A travel allowance of up to $400 will be provided to and from the location of the internship if necessary. The Company is not responsible for an intern’s personal vehicle and or personal vehicle expenses. A rent allowance of $500 per month will be provided if necessary. This will be limited to three months and prorated as necessary. Applicants must be Journalism majors and must have completed their freshman year by the summer break of 2017. Preference will be given to candidates who have worked on the campus newspaper or previous newspaper internships.

University of Arizona Press UNPAID

Deadline: Oct. 31. The University of Arizona Press is looking for driven, dependable interns for the Spring and Summer 2017 semesters. Interns will be exposed to the many facets of book publishing, including insight into how manuscript projects are submitted, reviewed, and selected for publication; the process of editing, designing, and producing a book; and the various aspects involved with marketing and advertising new titles. Denver Post Summer 2017 Internship PAID

Deadline: Oct. 31. Editors choose interns in news and features reporting, photography and design. Go to link to get details on application requirements. Must have had a prior internship and/or a couple years at the Wildcat.


Association for Women in Sports Media print, digital and broadcast reporting/production Summer 2017 Internships PAID

Deadline: Oct. 31. Offer eight internships that go along with eight scholarships available for summer 2017: three newspaper/magazine/digital, one broadcast reporting, two broadcast production and two public relations. Winners also receive a $1,000 scholarship and complimentary registration and lodging at AWSM’s annual convention in Austin in May. There is no fee for AWSM members to apply, and a $40 application fee for non-members. A student membership to AWSM is $25, which waives the internship/scholarship application fee. New York Times Summer Internships PAID

The Wall Street Journal Reporting in the Americas Summer Internship PAID

Deadline: Nov. 1, midnight, Eastern Time. Read details in the hyperlink in headline.

The Wall Street Journal’s internship program is aimed at undergraduate and graduate students who intend to pursue a career in journalism. Internship lasts 10 weeks. The summer internships generally take place over June, July and August, though start dates can be flexible in certain circumstances. Include a cover letter, resume and up to six published samples of your work (written and/or multi-media) in your online application. The screening process puts heavy emphasis on clips and journalistic experience. Most of those chosen have had prior internships with other media organizations as well as experience on a campus newspaper or as a freelancer. Only finalists will be contacted.


New York Times Student Journalism Institute FREE

The OregonianLive Summer 2017 Internship PAID

Deadline: Nov. 1. Offers 10-week summer intern program for college students who wish to work in a digitally focused newsroom. We’re looking for primarily students who have completed their junior or senior year and who have previous internship experience. Summer interns are given news and feature assignments just like regular staff members, producing journalism for the and The Oregonian. See details and application link here.


High Country News Internships & Fellowships PAID (really well!)

Deadline: Nov. 1. For students graduating in December. For all of our positions, a bachelor's degree or equivalent and some prior journalism experience and/or education is preferred. We also prefer applicants who are familiar withHigh Country News and who have lived in the West and know its environmental and community issues. Photographic experience and familiarity with audio and visual programs such as Final Cut Pro and Flash, as well as radio or video experience are all pluses. We strongly encourage Native American journalists, Hispanic journalists and those from other under-represented backgrounds to apply. Star-Tribune Media Company PAID

Deadline: Nov. 1 (application opens Oct. 1). Most successful applicants have completed their junior year in college, worked for a college news outlet AND interned with at least one other professional daily news organization.


Sports Journalism Institute PAID

Deadline: Nov. 2. Ten student journalists will be selected. Ideally, applicants should be college sophomores or juniors. Candidates will be selected on the basis of academic achievement, demonstrated interest in sports journalism as a career and excellence on the required essay. The Institute is designed to attract talented students to journalism through opportunities in sports reporting and editing and enhance racial and gender diversity in sports departments of newspapers nationwide. The program will begin with one week of classes at Missouri University in Columbia, Mo. and eight weeks of professional experience at a paid internship in the sports department of a daily newspaper in the U.S., and a $500 scholarship upon successful completion of the program for students returning to college.


L.A. Times 2017 Summer Reporting Internships PAID

Pacific Standard Magazine Fellowship PAID ($22.5K for the year)

Madden Media Marketing Design Internship UNPAID

The Madden Media marketing department is looking for an enthusiastic intern who is a fast learner and self-motivated (spring, summer, and fall semesters available). The Madden Media Tucson and Phoenix editorial departments normally hire 1-2 student interns for the spring, summer, and fall semesters. Interns are expected to work a minimum of 6-8 hours each week. American Society of Magazine Editors Summer 2017 Magazine Internship Immersion PAID

Deadline: Dec. 1. Applicants must have extensive experience at the school newspaper and/or prior magazine internships and a letter of recommendation from someone in the School of Journalism. All application materials must be submitted on the website. From the announcement: The Magazine Internship Program usually gives preference to students who have been recommended by academic departments and career-guidance offices over other applicants from the same school. A letter of recommendation should be included with the student’s application.

Deadline: Dec. 1. Thompson Reuters offers talented students and graduates with a strong background in journalism an opportunity to learn at the world's largest international multimedia news provider. Our paid internships are a crash course in hands-on business, political and general news reporting. Interns will receive formal training before they start work. Every intern will report to a senior editor and be assigned a journalist mentor who will be available to provide advice and guidance. F. James Pensiero Summer Reporting Internship at the WSJ PAID

Deadline: Dec. 15. Preference given to students from University of Oregon, and second preference to students from other state schools, such as UA!  Seeks current student or recent graduate who intends to pursue a career in business and financial journalism to work in New York City. Students majoring in business journalism or journalism with a second major or minor in economics or business will be favored. This is a paid, 10-week summer internship. The Knight-CUNY Summer 2017 Internship PAID

Deadline: Jan. 1, 2017. The Knight CUNYJ Summer Internship Program brings 20 aspiring journalists to New York City for two months — June and July — to participate in an all-expenses paid training and internship program. At the end of the summer, the five top performers are offered tuition-free enrollment at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism, if they apply and are admitted to one of CUNY’s M.A. programs.


Roy W. Howard National Collegiate Reporting Competition PAID REPORTING TRIP TO JAPAN

Deadline: Jan. 10, 2017

Awards nine of the country’s top student journalists from universities all around the country with an all-expenses paid trip to Japan each year. The Scripps Howard Foundation, with Indiana University journalism, established the Roy W. Howard National Collegiate Reporting Competition in 1984 to honor the memory of the journalist who led Scripps Howard Newspapers from 1922-1953 and United Press from 1912-1920. Asia was an area of special interest to Roy W. Howard, who traveled and reported on the area extensively, even while leading major news organizations. Tentative trip dates are May 11-20, 2017. Colorado Springs Gazette PAID and UNPAID

Deadlines and tuition here. Amos Gelb is the founder and Director of the Washington Media Institute. Professor Gelb produced virtually every type of television news programming during a two-decade broadcast journalism career, from daily news and multi-hour documentaries to undercover investigations to talk shows. Before establishing the Washington Media Institute, he was the director of academics for the American University’s Washington Semester and then was recruited by The George Washington University to design, manage and teach its Semester in Washington Journalism program, which became the first experiential media program to win an Emmy Award for student production.

·        If you want to work for a specific newspaper, TV station or magazine, find their contact on the internet and email or call them asking if they have summer internships. Not all publications advertise! Go for what you want.

·        A number of you have mentioned wanting to work on the east coast and/or for magazines. You can contact the managing editors at each of the following to ask about summer internships: Washington Life Magazine, the WashingtonianD.C. Life Magazine, and the Washington City Paper. Also, this is an entire list of publications in the D.C. area, and this is a list of options for fashion internships in D.C. Happy hunting!

·        Want to get some attention and help yourself get a job? Enter a national reporting contest and place in the top 20! Please see the attached Hearst Journalism Awards competition categories and deadlines then and bring your submissions to Renee for consideration at least a week before the deadline. If you are publishing stories through ASN or the Wildcat or UATV, you qualify!

·        Make sure you check out the Poytner job board for internships and job listings, as well as frequently look atNYU’s internship database of paid-internship deadlines. Please note: It is alphabetical and if the deadline says “2015” it simply means two things: The site hasn’t been updated this week and/or you can count that the 2016 deadline will be very close to the 2015 one.
