Dear students:

Welcome to your amazing internship listserv message! All the major internships have deadlines up now and they’ve been adjusted below. Read carefully; there’s a ton here. Good luck!

 

EVENTS – RSVP and mark your calendars

Pizza and Portfolios: Wednesday, Sept. 27, 5 to 7 p.m., beginning in Marshall Room 312 (Reading Room) featuring local journalism professionals and a chance to get your resumes, cover letters and work samples reviewed one on one by faculty and journalists. Sign up hereto attend (we have to know how much pizza to order) and vote on type of pizza we should order! Open to all students. This is a rare chance to hear from people who have made journalism a career.

Fall Internship Fair: Friday, Oct. 13, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Recruiters will be coming to interview for both spring 2018 and summer 2018 internships. Must have completed or be currently enrolled in JOUR 205 to attend. Exceptions made for students with at least a year’s experience/clips from the Wildcat or Aztec Press – see Renee. Recruiters are still being finalized. Two weeks from now, a link to sign up for interviews will be sent through this listserv.  Get your résumés, cover letters, and work samples prepared in both print and digital formats (PDFs) now, because all the recruiters you interview with want those materials sent to them via email by Oct. 7.

 

FEATURED INTERNSHIPS – for SPRING:

All three of these are working in Phoenix in the spring. You get a tuition waiver for 12 units of credit and you earn a $4,000 stipend.

 

·        Bolles Legislative Reporting Fellowship $4,000 stipend and tuition waiver for the spring

Deadline: Noon, Sept. 25.

Write 1-page statement on why you want the fellowship. Attach that statement to a current resume and three writing samples. Submit that packet to Dr. Terry Wimmer (room 324) by NOON on Sept. 25.

·        AZ Capitol Television Broadcast internship

Deadline: Oct. 25. $4,000 stipend and tuition waiver for the spring

The broadcast internships give students a rare opportunity to gain an insiders’ understanding of the legislative process while developing their television production, journalism and communication skills in a professional work environment. Interns work full-time at the State Capitol (January-May) producingvideo coverage of legislative proceedings for the Internet and cable television.Interns earn a paycheck, a tuition waiver (NAU and U of A students only), and up to 12 hours of upper division class credits.

NEW INTERNSHIPS AND JOB LISTINGS

Reuters 2018 Internship PAID

Deadline: Oct. 1 Every intern will report to a senior editor and be assigned a journalist mentor who will be available to provide advice and guidance. Internships last for 10 weeks and most will begin in early June 2018. Internships are available in many Reuters Americas bureaus. Reuters, the news and media division of Thomson Reuters, is the world’s largest international multimedia news provider reaching more than one billion people every day. Reuters provides trusted business, financial, national, and international news to professionals via Thomson Reuters desktops, the world's media organizations, and directly to consumers at Reuters.com. Application details at link above. They also have jobs for recent grads, so December and May grads, check that out.

 

Dow Jones has dozens of summer 2018 internships listed herePAID

Deadline: Varies, but most in early October. See details at link above

Seattle Times PAID

Deadline: Application opens here on Oct. 1. Deadline is Nov. 15, but they close application when they think they have the right interns, so apply early!

 

Atlanta Journal-Constitution PAID

Deadline: Oct. 1. Hires multiple interns. Must be a sophomore when applying and have had at least a year at the Wildcat and have completed (or are currently in) at least one internship to be competitive. All details at link above.

 

Washington Post Summer 2018 Internship PAID

Deadline: Oct. 6. Must be a junior, senior or graduate student. Go to this page for the FAQs to know how to prepare.

 

The Fulbright-National Geographic Storytelling FellowshipPAID

Deadline: Oct. 6. Part of the Fulbright U.S. Student Program, provides opportunities for U.S. citizens to participate in an academic year of overseas travel and storytelling in one, two, or three countries on a globally significant theme. This Fellowship is made possible through a partnership between the U.S. Department of State and the National Geographic Society. Storytellers publish stories on the Fulbright-National Geographic Stories blogVery good for graduate students.

 

Denver Post PAID

Deadline: Oct. 27 for summer 2018. Our editors choose full-time summer interns in news, business and features reporting (3 positions); digital production; photography; videography; and information design/visual communication. If you are applying for one of these positions, please email your cover letter, your resume with references, and an online portfolio or link to clips to internships@denverpost.comOnly digital applications will be accepted. LA TIMES summer reporting internship PAID

Deadline: Nov. 1 for reporting and visual journalism

See highlights below for other options/deadlines. Must have access to car in good working condition. We offer 10 weeks of intensive, hands-on experience in a region where big stories are the norm. We place interns throughout the L.A. Times: Metro/Local, Foreign/National, Sports, Business, Features (Home, Image, Travel, Food, Mind & Body), Arts & Entertainment, Editorial Pages, Photography/Video, Data Desk, Visualization and Data, Design, the website/audience engagement team and in the Sacramento and Washington, D.C., bureaus. These are paid internships and placements usually run from June to August. The deadline to apply for the reporting positions and visual journalism (photo and video) is Nov. 1; applications for the website/audience engagement and the Visualization and Data department are due Dec. 1; the page design and Data Desk deadline is Dec. 15. Go to this page and read application requirements and then, and only then, if you still have questions, contact Director of News Development Tracy Boucher at (213) 237-6737 ortracy.boucher@latimes.com.

 

High Country News Internships & Fellowships PAID (free housing and a stipend!)

Deadline: Nov. 1 for a January start date and in January for a summer start date. This is for students graduating in December or May who want to work with environmental journalism. Read all the info at the link in headline.

 

Star-Tribune Media Company PAID

Deadline: Nov. 1 Application open now. Most successful applicants have completed their junior year in college, worked for a college news outlet AND interned with at least one other professional daily news organization. See link above and keep checking for current application.

 

Sports Journalism Institute PAID

Deadline: Nov. 2. Ten student journalists will be selected. Ideally, applicants should be college sophomores or juniors. Candidates will be selected on the basis of academic achievement, demonstrated interest in sports journalism as a career and excellence on the required essay. The Institute is designed to attract talented students to journalism through opportunities in sports reporting and editing and enhance racial and gender diversity in sports departments of newspapers nationwide. The program will begin with one week of classes at Missouri University in Columbia, Mo. and eight weeks of professional experience at a paid internship in the sports department of a daily newspaper in the U.S., and a $500 scholarship upon successful completion of the program for students returning to college.

Pulliam Journalism Fellowship (Phoenix or Indianapolis) PAID

Deadline: Nov. 1. Should be at fall internship fair interviewing. Download application at link above or apply online BEFORE the Oct. 13 internship fair at our School! Join us for the summer of 2018. The Arizona Republic and Indianapolis Star, two of the largest papers in Gannett Co.'s USATODAY NETWORK, are seeking college students and new graduates with a talent for reporting, news design and graphics, social media, or photo- and video journalism for an exciting and demanding journalism fellowship program.

 

The Montreal Gazette PAID

Deadline: Nov. 1. Go to this link on Sept. 15 to get current year’s application. Deadline is always November.

 

Time Warner Broadcast internships. PAID

Chicago Public Media Internships PAID

Deadline: Depends of if you want spring or summer. Find out details here, including a nice little article on what makes a winning application!  CPM is noted for producing great radio, as well as producing Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me, a very popular news-quiz show.

 

McClatchy News Service PAID

Deadline: Varies according to position and location. See all details here and use filters.

 

NBCUniversal SOME PAID

Deadlines: September & October, depending on internship. NBC Universal has posted all its major internships here. Students should apply as soon as possible for highest consideration, according to the NBCUni Campus recruiter. Summer 2017 internships will be posted by the end of September, but the recruiter advises checking the hyperlink above daily for new postings and applying right away. They sometimes close applications before the deadline if they think they have

 

TEGNA – all stations PAID

Deadlines: Varies by station. Sign up here for news alerts so you see job openings and internship opportunities. Phoenix News 12 is one of these stations and they have three paid internships each summer.

 

Wogammer Fellowship PAID

If you’re female and have coding skills, mark this on your calendar to check for the current deadline in December.

 

Mediacom Summer Internship PAID

Deadline: Late fall/early spring. The link above takes you to all the information about the internship that just concluded (summer 2017), so look at it and if interested, mark your calendars to check back to the link mid-September and then every week thereafter for the 2018 application.

 

The Tulsa World PAID

Deadline: Dec. 1. Put this on your calendar for Oct. 15 to look for application. Deadline is always sometime in December.

 

Rio Grande SunNew Mexico PAID – and housing provided!

Deadline: February. You just apply through the common application at the International Society of Weekly Newspaper Editors website here: http://www.iswne.org/ ISWNE offers internships at papers across the country and not all of them pay, but the Rio Grande Sun does, and the editor helps interns get housing for almost no cost or free, so list Rio Grande Sun as your top choice and then also reach out to the editor there. We have a 2017 UA alum working there and she loves it.

 

The Austin (TX) Chronicle. UNPAID

The Austin Chronicle offers unpaid internships in the spring, summer, and fall semesters. School credit available, and hours are flexible. Interns will be paired with one or more departments (News, Music, Food, Arts & Culture, Screens, and Social Media), work closely with editors, and gain first-hand experience with print and digital newsroom operations. Applicants should send a cover letter, three writing samples (journalism or academic), and a résumé to internships@austinchronicle.com. Please include in your cover letter your background, interests, and preferred department. See hyperlink above for deadlines for different semesters.

 

Broadway World (online magazine) editorial internshipUNPAID

Deadline: Reach out to them at intern2017@bwayworld.com or through the online form on this page in February to ask when and how to apply for summer 2018.

 

WMCNews: UNPAID

Deadline: March 1, 2018. This Memphis, TN stations takes a news intern and a meteorology intern each summer. Go here for details.

 

Christian County Headliner News; Ozark, Missouri

Deadline: Probably March. Reach out in February to their current managing editor for details on how to apply. Only paper of record for Christian County, MO, and they takemultiple interns each summer.

 

NBC News Associates Program PAID

Deadline is usually in March but applications open in January and are first-come first-served, so apply early. Check this website in November to know how to apply and get your letters of recommendation.

 

KUER 90.1 NPR station PAID (UTAH)

Deadline: Rolling. You need to reach out through link above by February for a summer internship. This is paid only $500 for the semester, but if you’re in Utah for the summer and can live at home… worth it.

 

YOUR TIP-SHEET:

Want an international internship? The School of Journalism has a $2,000 scholarship it gives out to students who want get a journalism internship in a foreign country. Here’s some advice on why you might consider an internship in a foreign country and you can come talk to me about ways to find journalism internships abroad.

Ø  If you want to intern at CNN, make sure you have a program in mind that you want to intern for. Read this student’s article about her experience on the Erin Burnett’s “Out Front” prime-time political reporting show. See all CNN internships (and everything from Turner Broadcasting here.) You can add your email on the Turner page to be notified of internship and job openings.

Ø  Ed2010 is the place to go for magazine internships. Students can sign up with their email to search for internships or potential jobs. The website also sends out weekly emails with tips or articles that are helpful. Go to Ed2010.com to sign up and check it out.

Ø  The Arizona Daily Star freelance reporters PAID

Ø  Good opportunity for students to get their work published and get paid. All you need is a good story pitch! If you’ve got a piece you’ve been working on in journalism 306 or another journalism class, or if there something you’ve always wanted to do, pitch it to Mr. Corella at hcorella@tucson.com or, if you want to write for #ThisisTucson, pitch Irene McKisson at imckisson@tucson.com. Pay ranges from $50-$100 depending on the story.
