Dear students:

 

This is coming early because I’ll be out of the office Thursday and I have many of you coming in tomorrow for resume reviews. Read all this and especially tips at end. Please note:

·        We have TWO recruiters coming next week looking for fall interns here in Tucson. If you want to work in journalism, you need at least two internships to be competitive in job market. These two internships are entry-level and great experience. Right now, no students have signed up. That’s crazy ridiculous. So, here you go again, and for heaven’s sake, sign up!

Some experience outside the classroom in those roles is preferred, but certainly not required. OTHER EVENTS to sign up for:

Professional Media Panel, Tuesday, Feb. 27 from 4:30 to 6 p.m., for all students. Come hear various professionals discuss how they got their jobs and how you can get one. This event is in Room 341 (that’s a change from previous announcements) and is a great information session and networking opportunity. If you are a senior graduating in May and do not yet have a job offer, you should be at this session. If you’re any other student, you’ll learn something and make connections. There are about 10 openings to sign up, which you can do with your name and email at this link. There are still plenty of openings.

 

NBC UNIVERSAL RECRUITING HERE, Monday, March 12.

This is for the NBC News Associates Program, an early- career opportunity in NBC News division. It is a paid, full time, year-long commitment in New York. This is for seniors or graduate students graduating in May who want to work in TV production for a year at NBC’s various studios and programs. She is also willing to speak with sophomores or juniors who would be interested in the next two summers. There are only THREE more interview openings (highlighted like this) at this sign-up link. You need to apply no later than 1 p.m. on March 11 here, and bring your resume and cover letter to the interview on March 12 and must come to the presentation the recruiter is giving at 8:15 a.m. in Room 340 March 12 before your interview.

Wisconsin Public Radio (NPR affiliate) PAID

Deadline: March 9. Wisconsin Public Radio seeks an intern to work in our Eau Claire regional office for the summer of 2018.  This internship is designed to attract college students of color and others from underrepresented groups. The internship experience will provide the successful candidate with solid training in the basics of broadcast journalism and public affairs call-in talk show production.  The intern will develop a portfolio of materials, scripts and possibly audio examples of their work at WPR.  The ideal candidate seeks a career in broadcasting or journalism and possesses curiosity, good writing ability, and strong interpersonal skills.  The position reports to WPR’s Eau Claire Regional Manager.  Work hours are Monday-Friday, 40 hours per week for 12 weeks in WPR’s Eau Claire Office.  Pay is $10 per hour. Washington Media Institute For credit program in D.C.

Deadline: March 30. This program costs about $9,000 for the summer for tuition and housing, but you get a fulltime internship and if you’re interested in national media, this is a great way to get in with D.C. media and politics. If you have financial aid, you can apply it to a semester at WMI. Check it all outhere.

Mother Jones Ben Bagdikian editorial fellows PAID

Deadline: April 1 for June 1 start date. Mother Jones is currently accepting applications for its prestigious Ben Bagdikian Fellowship Program, located in San Francisco and Washington, DC. This is a full-time opportunity, starting in December and lasting six months, with the possibility of an additional six-month extension. Mother Jones fellows dig deep into our investigations as fact-checkers, soak up research chops and digital skills, and learn how a nonprofit news business hums. They comb archives and spreadsheets while immersed full time in our collaborative projects. Mother Jones is better for it, and at the end of a six-month or yearlong intensive stint, MoJo fellows are armed with all the tools of the journalism trade—tools they’ve gotten paid to learn. Sinclair Broadcast Group Diversity Scholarship PAID

Deadline: April 16. This scholarship was established in 2016 to provide financial support to college students interested in broadcasting, journalism, and marketing. The Fund plans to award up to 10 scholarships of up to $5,000 each per year for the next ten years to students from under-represented minority groups who need financial assistance to complete their education. The Lee Ester News Fellowship PAID

Designed for a recent graduate or someone in the early years of his or her career as a radio news reporter.  The successful candidate will work as a full-time reporter in Wisconsin Public Radio’s Madison newsroom for nine months, beginning in early July.  Wisconsin Public Radio consists of 2 state-wide networks of 37 stations. Wisconsin Public Radio (NPR affiliate) PAID

Deadline: March 9. Wisconsin Public Radio seeks an intern to work in our Eau Claire regional office for the summer of 2018.  This internship is designed to attract college students of color and others from underrepresented groups. The internship experience will provide the successful candidate with solid training in the basics of broadcast journalism and public affairs call-in talk show production.  The intern will develop a portfolio of materials, scripts and possibly audio examples of their work at WPR.  The ideal candidate seeks a career in broadcasting or journalism and possesses curiosity, good writing ability, and strong interpersonal skills.  The position reports to WPR’s Eau Claire Regional Manager.  Work hours are Monday-Friday, 40 hours per week for 12 weeks in WPR’s Eau Claire Office.  Pay is $10 per hour. Washington Media Institute For credit program in D.C.

Deadline: March 30. This program costs about $9,000 for the summer for tuition and housing, but you get a fulltime internship and if you’re interested in national media, this is a great way to get in with D.C. media and politics. Mother Jones Ben Bagdikian editorial fellows PAID

Deadline: April 1 for June 1 start date. Mother Jones is currently accepting applications for its prestigious Ben Bagdikian Fellowship Program, located in San Francisco and Washington, DC. This is a full-time opportunity, starting in December and lasting six months, with the possibility of an additional six-month extension. Mother Jones fellows dig deep into our investigations as fact-checkers, soak up research chops and digital skills, and learn how a nonprofit news business hums. They comb archives and spreadsheets while immersed full time in our collaborative projects. Mother Jones is better for it, and at the end of a six-month or yearlong intensive stint, MoJo fellows are armed with all the tools of the journalism trade—tools they’ve gotten paid to learn.
