Report for America PAID

Deadline: Feb 1. For a June 2019 start. For December and May grads! This is a great opportunity for a yearlong reporting position that comes with training. They are looking for talented, service-oriented journalists who want to serve under-covered areas to provide Americans with the information they need to improve their communities and hold powerful institutions accountable. In 2018, 13 journalists were selected and placed in newsroomsacross the country and in 2019, 28 journalists will be selected. D.C. Internships Program – Summer 2019. Tuition required but scholarships available.

Deadline: Jan. 15, 2019. Have you considered study abroad? Well, if you want to be eventually be a political reporter, consider the D.C. Internships program, which costs about the same as study abroad but has more scholarship monies available. More information on the programs may be found at



Rio Grande SUN seeking city reporter

Deadline: ASAP. A recent UA grad works here and the editor takes students directly out of college. Seeking someone with experience writing about local government (think city council and everything taught in RPA), so those of you who’ve worked on the metro desk of the Star or covered UA for the Wildcat would qualify for sure. Kansas City Star Summer 2019 Internship PAID

The interns will work 40 hours a week (including occasional nights and weekends) covering breaking news and enterprise stories. The internship runs 10 weeks and pays $15/hour. We’re looking for reporters who can spot a good story and know how to write it. Video and social media skills also are a must. Past daily newsroom internship experience preferred. Deadline: Dec. 31. Great for May grads. This is a magazine that covers news, analysis and trend stories on the luxury residential market worldwide. This internship is through Dow Jones. Read all details and how to apply here. Qualified candidates should be journalism majors of at least junior level with an interest in real estate or business. They should also be well-versed in digital storytelling, research and social media. This is a paid internship with the option of also receiving college credit.

The American Press Institute PAID

Deadline: Jan. 6, 2019. Did you take Professor McKisson’s app development class? Do you want to change the world with news and new methods for delivering the news? Then this might be for you. It is for college students or recent graduates who have a strong desire to advance innovation in news organizations. Unlike a summer internship, a core component of the program is a self-proposed fellowship project. Read all the requirements at the link above.


Journalism in the Era of Disinformation Fellowship (JED) PAID

Deadline: Jan. 14, 2019. Fully funded fellowship program focusing on confronting the trend of disinformation in the news media. Travel to Washington, D.C. and New York to discuss these topics with media experts and journalists, and develop best practice suggestions alongside their visiting peers from schools of journalism in Germany. Each year, up to eight students each from Germany and the U.S. are selected to participate in this week-long program in Washington, D.C. and New York, which will focus on political coverage in the U.S. and Germany and analyze the trend of "fake news". The program covers various program expenses for participants, including flight costs to/from Washington, D.C. and New York, program-related travel and accommodations, workshops and discussions with high-level contacts at various media, think tanks, and political institutions, and daily stipends during the program. Eligible candidates for the JED Fellowship will demonstrate a strong interest in a career in journalism focusing on political coverage (local, state, or federal), have previous experience as an intern or employee in a media setting, and be citizens or permanent residents in the country in which they are studying (the U.S. or Germany) You can find more information, including the online application form.


Seniors – pay attentionNewhouse Graduate Newspaper Fellowship for MinoritiesPAID

Deadline: Jan. 15, 2019 This competitive program is for those who want to write, report and tell important stories. It also appeals to those who are interested in multimedia and understand the necessity of innovation. The goal of this initiative is to diversify newsrooms and editorial staffs by launching the careers of those from underrepresented groups as newspaper or magazine journalists. Two awards are given annually ­ — each worth more than $65,000. The winners study in the Magazine, Newspaper, and Online Journalismmaster’s program at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. The fellowship combines 18 months of graduate study with a professional internship and provides free tuition, a monthly stipend that totals $1,400, health insurance coverage, and up to $3,000 of additional benefits. Candidates must provide three letters of recommendation, résumé, and a personal statement. No GRE is required.


Pennsylvania Capitol Reporters PAID

Slate Editorial D.C. Internship PAID

Deadline: Feb 1. Candidates for the D.C. editorial internship should be available to work in Slate's Washington office between 20 and 40 hours per week. (We can schedule hours around classes.) They will tackle a mix of duties, including research, assisting with the Dear Prudence live chat, and writing for the Slatest and Future Tense verticals. They must be organized, have a proven interest in journalism, and be familiar with Slate's style of analysis and opinion. They must also be able to work efficiently and without much supervision. To apply, please send a single PDF that includes a brief cover letter, a résumé, a 200-word response to any Slate story from the past month (this should be a critique of the author's arguments, not comments on grammar or sentence structure), and three clips by the deadline below. Daily Press Internship Program
Deadline: February 18, 2019
Pay: $10 per hour for 35 hours per week
Description: "The Daily Press Media Group offers a paid, 10-week summer internship program in its editorial and advertising departments. Interns are assigned a mentor and participate in team meetings. Teamwork is underscored at every level in our newsroom."


Metpro Program PAID

Deadline: March 2019. For December and May grads. Metpro is not an internship but a formal program customized to help trainees realize their goals, a unique program designed to help beginning journalists launch careers and boost diversity in the Los Angeles Times and Chicago Tribune newsrooms. They seek high-potential, highly motivated aspiring journalists with diverse backgrounds or life experiences. The program's main thrust is to provide participants - recent college graduates or journalists with limited professional experience - the training and support necessary to put them on a fast track to success. This American Life Fellowship PAID

Turner Broadcasting PAID

Deadline: Varies. Home of CNN and all the programming. Details here.



ClifBar Company offers post-grad scholarship.

Deadline: Jan. 25. This is a scholarship to help pay off student loans. You can’t apply if you don’t have outstanding debt. It is also a business-based scholarship, but you can be a journalism major to apply. You have to have a project to pitch and it has to do with your future career in business, and journalism IS a business. It is worth taking a look at.


This is also an interesting article about unique internships.

These look like tech internships, but what you need to know is that every tech company has a communications and/or social media arm and some of them might have internships for journalism students. Check it out.


Also read this to find internships in other fields for your Plan B in case you don’t get a journalism internship or journalism job right out of college. Remember: It is important to be working (or internship for pay) each summer and after you graduate. The number one predictor of not getting a job is – surprise! – not having a job when looking for a job after college.
