Latzman wins spring 2019 Gyorke photo award

Marisa Latzman captured first place in the spring 2019 Drew Gyorke Memorial Fund Photo Contest for her image of a cemetery superintendent.

Rebeca Moreno took second place with a photo of a young girl helping her family sell Girl Scout cookies, while Lexi Horsey finished third with an action shot of University of Arizona women's basketball star Aari McDonald.

The contest featured 12 student finalists from Professor Kim Newton’s JOUR 203 photography class. Their images will hang later on the School of Journalism hallway wall in front of Newton’s office (Marshall 327).

Drew Gyorke, an adventurer and aspiring photojournalist at UA, died his junior year in a May 2013 car accident.

The award, endowed by the Gyorke family, recognizes the best beginning photojournalism students. (See past winners and photos since 2013).

Latzman will receive $200, with Moreno getting $125 and Horsey $75.
