Summer 2020 Data Reporting Intern

Deadline

About the Internship

The Wall Street Journal is seeking a data reporting intern to work with our investigations team and the broader newsroom. The internship is based in New York City.

The position will contribute to reporting and data analysis to enterprise projects and daily coverage. Working with reporters around the world, you will be immersed in data-driven stories and gain hands-on experience analyzing millions (or billions) of rows of data using tools like Excel, SQL, Python, and R.

Applicants should be excited at the prospect of battling FOIA officers, scraping poorly formed websites and learning to write computer code that ferrets out fraud.

You should have experience analyzing and visualizing data with Excel, SQL and R or Python Pandas, and also have an understanding of scripting with Python or other languages to scrape and mold unstructured data from websites.

You should be a self-starter who understands the needs of our growing audience on various platforms and able to work independently under deadline pressure. Dedication to high journalism standards and excellent writing and reporting skills are required.

The screening process puts heavy emphasis on journalistic experience. You should have completed at least one prior internship—ideally with a professional news organization—or done exceptional work with a campus news outlet or as a freelancer.

How to Apply

Please submit a resume and cover letter. You may also choose to include up to five published samples of your work. (PDFs are ideal, but you can include a link to a website for visual/interactive work samples.) The deadline to apply is Nov. 1, 2019.

Timing

Summer internships take place over June, July, and August, though start dates can be flexible in certain circumstances.

Only finalists will be contacted. We will review applications on a rolling basis and strive to make selections by mid-December.

Will I Be Paid?

Yes, interns are paid $900 per week, and we help with the cost of public transportation. We do not provide housing, but we can help point you in the right direction.
