Winter 2020 Health and Science Reporting Intern

Deadline

About the Internship

The Wall Street Journal is seeking undergraduates, recent graduates or graduate students who intend a career in science or health journalism to intern with the Journal’s Health & Science bureau in New York.

This is a 10-week, full-time paid internship that would start in January or February. It cannot be completed while taking classes.

You will work closely with reporters and editors to deliver prompt, accurate reporting of science news and generally hone your journalistic skills. You will write spot stories based on scientific and medical studies; explanatory pieces that analyze science and health angles related to breaking news; and features that uncover trends in various fields of science and medicine from biology to epidemiology to environmental science, among other projects. You are expected to generate your own story ideas and follow the stories through to completion with supervision and guidance from an editor.

Our interns are self-starters with the ability to help develop video, graphics and social media content to reach audiences on all digital and print platforms. Dedication to high journalism standards, proof of excellent writing skills and dogged reporting are absolute musts.

A health or science background or familiarity with research is a plus but not required. You should have prior reporting experience and a demonstrated interest in medical or science journalism as well as the ability to work independently and under deadline pressure.

The screening process puts heavy emphasis on journalistic experience. You should have completed at least one prior reporting internship with another professional media organization, or published exceptional work with a campus news outlet or as a freelancer.
