Walter Rice is a supply chain manager with Raytheon Missile Systems in Tucson.



David Heim served in the U.S. Navy Reserve for 24 years with active duty tours off the coast of Lebanon (1983), Operation Desert Storm (1991), Somalia (1993-94), Kosovo (1999), and Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003). In his civilian career, he worked in the private sector construction and development markets for 10 years, then in 1996 joined the Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority in Norfolk, Va., where he now serves as the director of capital construction. He earned a master of public administration degree from Old Dominion University in 2000. "I wanted to see the world after graduation so I joined the Navy,” David wrote. “When I completed my initial active duty tour I gravitated back to the construction field having worked summer construction jobs all through high school and college. But now more than ever I rely on my Arizona journalism degree in navigating the obstacle course of public service and politics in southeast Virginia."



Hans Laetz is a newswire editor at City News Service of Los Angeles, and graduated from the Santa Barbara/Ventura Colleges of Law last year. He also runs the California LNG News Service and is working as a coastal and energy law analyst and appeal writer out of his home at Zuma Beach.



Tom Frankman is the associate dean of academic services at William Woods University in Fulton, Mo.



Patrick O’Grady, a reporter with the Phoenix Business Journal, was one of 20 business and environmental journalists who won fellowships to attend the “Covering the Green Economy Seminar” presented by the Donald W. Reynolds National Center for Business Journalism June 28-30 in Phoenix.




Adam Djurdjulov received his Doctor of Medicine degree with honors from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston on June 5. He worked for Verizon in sales and marketing prior to pursuing a career in medicine. After a year of internship in Houston, he will complete a residency in anesthesiology at Stanford University.

Eric Anderson is the senior editor for the entertainment news website, associated with the TV show "Access Hollywood," in Burbank, Calif.




Jenna Duncan is a freelance media specialist in New York City.



Brent Biedel is the political news correspondent in Buenos Aires, Argentina, for an Iranian, English-speaking news channel named Press TV. Visit at



Ryan Gabrielson will be joining California Watch in August 2010 as a public safety investigative reporter. California Watch is part of the Center for Investigative Reporting. He is currently a 2009-2010 investigative reporting fellow at the University of California, Berkeley. Previously, Ryan’s reporting for the East Valley Tribune in Mesa won him and UA journalism graduate Paul Giblin ’88 the 2009 Pulitzer Prize.



Brett Fera is the new managing editor of the Maricopa Monitor. He replaces outgoing M.E. Adam Gaub ’06.




Joel Monson is a research assistant at Stanford University.



Ryan Casey has left the Ahwatukee Foothills News to become the online prep sports editor at the Denver Post.

Jackie Karas is a freelance publicist in New York City. Among her projects is publicizing a vintage-inspired contemporary collection for women and men sold at high-end boutiques called “What Comes Around Goes Around.”

Jason Kleinman was recently promoted to an associate producer with NFL Network.

Laura Ory is a public relations specialist at Ewing Irrigation in Phoenix.



Cassie Blombaum is a communications specialist at Raytheon Missile Systems in Tucson.

David Kemper is a commercial specialist with InsurTexas, a division of Nationwide Insurance. He lives in Houston.

Rachael Lieberman is the project coordinator in the Career Acceleration Program for a private consulting firm called Genesis 10. She’s living in Charlotte, N.C.

Eric Schwartz graduated in December from Boston University's master's program in science and medical journalism. In January he went to Germany, where he is currently a science writing intern with the European Southern Observatory based in Munich. He writes stories, scripts, image captions and other articles for them. Eric’s also applying for internships and jobs all over the world that involve science writing and science journalism though he says he would also like to keep his hand in writing other kinds of journalism.



Rogelio Sanchez works in finance with the Bureau of Prisons. He lives in Tucson.

Ari Wasserman is a staff writer with, a website dedicated to Ohio State University athletics.



Candace Begody is an associate editor at Arizona HealthCare Partnership in Tucson.


In Memoriam

Gonzalo B. Urias ’58 – Feb. 19, 2010. Gonzalo was a reporter with the Arizona Daily Star and held positions with Toastmaster’s International and the Mayflower Warehouseman’s Association. A resident of Indianapolis, he was president of the Indiana chapter of the UA Alumni Association and spent 20 years in the U.S. Naval Reserves.
