Sarah Garrecht Gassen is a columnist and editorial writer at the Arizona Daily Star, a contributor to the New York Times and has taught journalism at the School for more than a decade.
Her coverage of public education, health care, social services and government for the Star’s news, features and editorial pages has received awards. Gassen earned her master’s degree in journalism in 2010, with a focus on disability as a diversity issue.
Gassen works with The New York Times Student Institute at the UA, and manages UA students who work in the Star newsroom through the UA-Arizona Daily Star apprentice reporter program. She has blended journalism with youth development through work with a non-profit youth writing program, high school journalism workshops, and advising high school journalism instructors on opinion writing.
