Director, School of Journalism
We hope you had a restful break and are ready for another semester.
I encourage you to take advantage of some great opportunities planned for spring, including:
- News Hack Arizona, Jan. 30-31, where students and professionals come together to learn cool sought-after skills, like data visualization, here at the UA. Check it out at http://www.newshackarizona.org/ or contact Professor Mike McKisson, who is helping to organize it.
- “Selma” at the Loft, 7 p.m. Feb. 6, where you can meet the author of the book and talk about journalists’ role in the civil rights movement ($7.50 for students).
- Glenn Greenwald and Noam Chomsky, March 25, to talk about journalism, national security, Edward Snowden, and government surveillance. Time/place to be announced. Planning to have Greenwald at a showing of "Citizenfour" at the Loft March 24, as well.
And watch for many other events with guest speakers, the chance to connect with employers, and hone your skills. Make sure to follow the listserv and the events at the school’s Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/uajschool/
Also make sure to take advantage of the more than $60,000 in scholarships we give out each spring – apply! (see https://journalism.arizona.edu/annual-scholarships). Participate in student clubs (contact Professor Susan Knight for information). Take advantage of your professors, Paloma, internship coordinator Renee, and others here dedicated to help you succeed. Go to their office hours, ask for their advice, expand your career network. Let me know if you are having problems, and how we can do a better job.
We are UA Journalism. Work hard, have fun, and bear down!
