About the Major

In today's fast-paced world with a relentless news cycle, the role of journalism is more vital than ever. Whether you aspire to be a storyteller, a content creator or a digital/social media expert, our comprehensive curriculum ensures that you're well-prepared for any career path you choose. The transferrable skills that you will acquire through a journalism degree — writing, researching, critical thinking and public speaking — also translate to a wide spectrum of career fields, including law and graduate school.

Throughout your journey in our program, you'll delve into the core principles of journalism and media, learning to craft compelling content reports tailored for diverse platforms including print, digital, social, broadcast and audio. Our hands-on approach means you'll engage in practical exercises, honing your skills in information gathering, interviewing techniques, content analysis and ethical reporting. You will also gain experience in the field, beyond the classroom.

In addition to our core journalism courses, students have the flexibility to tailor their studies to their interests and career goals, such as global and border reporting, sports media, digital content creation and science and environmental reporting. We encourage interdisciplinary discovery and engagement, recognizing that journalism pairs well with a multitude of minors and second majors  in specialized areas such as political science, law, communication or global studies. This interdisciplinary approach enriches your understanding of complex issues and enhances your ability to report on diverse topics with depth and nuance.
